Leander Perez is a narrative work from Singleton's “Struggle Series,” about the longtime segregational boss of Louisiana's Plaquemine's Parish and the aftermath of Hurricane Camille in August, 1969. Perez, a truncheon-wielding policeman at his side, is shown haranguing the city blacks who have come to help clean up the storm wreckage. He is warning them not to incite the Plaquermines Parish blacks to the right, whe were under Perez's iron hand.
